I've always had been intrigued by these two words - 'Destiny' & 'Fate' because I think they are two of the most beautiful words in the English dictionary. They seem to have that angelic effect on me, somehow giving out their aura of serenity and joy.

We have always used them interchangeably. However, they encompass two different but related meanings. Hence, I decided to run a mini search on the words and hey, it has provided me with some enlightenment. =)

According to wikipedia.com, destiny refers to the 'predetermined course of events', 'a fixed timeline of events that is inevitable and unchangeable'. A distinct difference between 'destiny' and 'fate' can be that 'fate is the power or agency that predetermines and orders the course of events' in modern usage.

In other words, 'Fate is the backdrop on which we play out our destiny.'. Fate already has the finality of events worked out for us. The various paths are already been laid out. We are forced into the circumstances - 'the opportunities and limitations placed before us; the situation we are bound to that is beyond our control; and sometimes beyond our meagre understanding as to how they happen but are a part of destiny in that they shape us.'

On the other hand, destiny cannot be forced on someone. It involves our compromising and determined participation. We play a direct part in the activities and events. We decide the path(s) we take that will lead to a certain outcome and hence, determining future circumstances.

In short, 'by participating in our destiny, we shape fate'.

Hope it doesn't sound complicated and confusing. Haha.

So can we say that when a person enters your life for whatever purpose there may be, it is fate? It is only your destiny when you interact with the person and both of you direct the friendship or relationship to a certain outcome. For instance, it is a destiny that two persons can remain as good friends with that camaraderie and understanding existing always even though they might not meet up with each other often. But it's truly fate that dictates that they will meet in this life and become best friends. In the sense that they both work hard towards the stage of friendship they share now. In doing so, they shape fate.

On last note, I feel that people really enter your life for a reason, for the better or worse - that's fate. You might meet someone, be it a friend of the same or opposite gender, who you can really relate to and share almost the same interests. To me, it's kinda amazing and fortunate to have such a person in your life. It's not like you can really talk about everything under the sun with a particular person. Thus, I will definitely treasure such a friendship, no matter what the future outcome will be as we participate in our destiny.

In contrast, you might meet someone who perhaps has been always giving you trouble or who always hurt you in one way or another. Hahaa... like a friend has commented, maybe you owe that person in previous life, that's why he or she is here in this life as a chance for you to make compensation for that person. Lolz.. haha.. sounds like a scientifically-unproven logic. Hee... nonetheless, if that happens to you, you have the right to consider the friendship - whether to end it, improve it or let it be. Our destiny, remember? =)

Lastly, have a great weekend for now!! =p
